ABOUT TYLER
My journey into fiber arts began twelve years ago when I discovered the meditative effects of embroidery while working in a high-stress environmental nonprofit career. I then started exploring other forms of fiber art, such as frame loom weaving and punch needle, both of which quickly became essential parts of my mental health care.In 2023, after experiencing severe burnout, I made the difficult decision to leave my career in the nonprofit sector after fifteen years to fully commit to my art. Discovering my love for teaching fiber arts has been a tremendous gift. Over the last two years, I've taught more than sixty Introduction to Punch Needle Workshops and led several Community Weaving Activations in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and California.
Although I am self-taught, my experience in the environmental sector has been my primary source of inspiration. My fiber work combines traditional techniques from embroidery and punch needle with a modern twist. I have developed my own style by dyeing monk's cloth using indigo and fiber-reactive dyes to change the color of my foundation cloth. I’ve also combined various styles of punch needle and tufting, adding texture and depth to my pieces. My art is influenced by nature and focuses on bold statements through color and texture. I am driven by creativity, the therapeutic benefits of making art, and social responsibility, aiming to foster joy, connection, and inclusivity.
When not making art, I love to visit local coffee shops, spend time in nature with my husband, search for treasures at thrift shops, and dream of my next trip to the beach with my family.
